Economic Development Manager's REPORT

 

Wine of the Month

TP Action: 3.1.2

The Cabonne Country wine of the month for March is the Family Reserve Pinot Gris 2012 from Windowrie Estate.  This exciting wine has been listed in the top 4 Pinot Gris of Australia and is a fantastic accompaniment to seafood or white fish.

 

Windowrie is a family owned and operated winery and a leading producer in the Cowra Wine Region. Their cellar door is at the Mill in Cowra.

 

What’s On in Cabonne

TP Action: 2.1.1, 3.1.2

‘What’s On’ is sent to tourism operators and village information centres throughout Cabonne, Visitor Information Centres in Forbes, Parkes, Cowra, Wellington, Orange and Bathurst and other outlets throughout the region.

 

The ‘What’s On’ is also emailed to regional media outlets and over 400 subscribers on the Cabonne Country mailing list. Events are also listed on the Cabonne Country website.

 

The March edition of “What’s on in Cabonne” will be presented to the ED & T Committee at the meeting.

 

Cabonne Country Website

TP Action: 3.1.2, 3.4.2, 3.5.2

The Cabonne Country website had over 5,495 distinct visitors during January 2013. The most popular tourism search phrases were Escort Rock, Molong Gelato and Cumnock.

 

Molong 100 Mile Dinner

TP Action: 4.7.1, 4.7.3, 4.9.1 and 5.2.1

Preparations are well underway for the 100 Mile Dinner at the Molong Village Green with 80% of tickets now sold. The organisers are working closely with Molong Advancement Group and the Yarn Market to ensure a successful event.

The dinner will be held on Monday 15 April 2013 as part of FOOD Week.

 

Tourism Signage

TP Action: 4.2.3 and 4.3.2

At the time of writing this report Cabonne Council was waiting on a response from RMS regarding tourism/directional signage at Escort Rock and Canowindra.

 

Canowindra VIC and Age of Fishes Museum Update

TP Action: 4.4.1, 4.4.8, 4.5.1

The Age of Fishes Museum’s tourism signage application is due for renewal and will be presented to the TASAC meeting in March 2013.

 

Canberra Food and Wine Show

TP Action: 1.1.3, 5.2.1, 5.2.4 and 5.3.2

A successful cooperative marketing initiative  conducted by Cabonne Council, Cowra Tourism, Taste Orange and Orange City Council was held over 3 days (15 – 17 February) at the Canberra Convention Centre.  The event attracted large crowds, many of whom showed keen interest in visiting our region. A full report on visitor numbers and demographics will be provided at the April ED&T Committee meeting.

 

Cabonne operators participating at this event included Philip Shaw, Belgravia, Faisan, Rosnay, Swinging Bridge, Toms Waterhole, Jo Robson and Small Acres Cider.

 

National publicity

TP Action: 1.1.3, 5.2.1, 5.2.4 and 5.3.2

Our leading regional producer’s event, FOOD Week was featured during the Canberra broadcast of Tropfest 2013 on Sunday 17 February. This promotion coincided with the Canberra Food and Wine Show.

 

On Friday 22 February ABC Radio’s Overnight program featured Molong as their “Road Trip” destination. This program is broadcast nationally.  Well known Molong resident Des Sullivan spoke very positively about Molong’s history and future.

 

Sydney Morning Herald journalist Elissa Blake visited a number of sites and villages in Cabonne Country while researching for a new article on the Gold Trails.

 

Central NSW Tourism Update

TP Action: 5.2.2

Cabonne Council’s Central NSW Tourism membership fees for 2012/2013 have been approved for payment.

 

CNSW Tourism now has a facebook page which promotes Cabonne Country events and attractions. The link is:

Modern Mining Trail

TP Action: 5.2.2

The Modern Mining Trail is a regional initiative designed for ‘free range’ travellers. It has been developed to include 4 main routes. These are:

·    Western Gateway (Parkes, Forbes, Narromine & Dubbo LGAs)

·    Southern Gateway (Bland & Lachlan LGAs)

·    Regional Showcase (Orange, Cabonne, Blayney & Cowra)

·    Western Crossroads (Cobar & Carathool LGAs)

Also included are 6 main mining attractions:

·    North Parkes Mine

·    Newcrest Cadia

·    Peak Hill Open Cut Experience

·    Great Cobar Copper

·    Peak Gold

·    Barrick Cowal

 

Marketing and promotional material, website and signage are currently being developed with funding from Destination NSW.

 

Gold Trail

TP Action: 5.2.2

The Gold Trails project continues to develop with updates to the website now including an events guide. The website is www.goldtrails.com.au

 

Cabonne Country have applied for a Gold Trails iPad kiosk which will be installed within our Visitor Information Centre and provide up to date, interactive access to Gold Trails information and activities.

 

Community Assistance

TP Action: 1.1.3, 5.2.5

Council’s PTO has provided advice and/or assistance to the following organisations, operators and event co-ordinators throughout February:

 

·    Taste Orange – FOOD Week

·    Molong 100 Mile Dinner

·    Amusu Theatre/Film Festival

Economic Development Manager's REPORT

 

Small Towns Development Group

EDS Objective 9.5

 

The next Small Towns Development Group meeting is to be held on 9 April, following the Daroo Committee meeting at Molong Council Chambers.

 

UTS Student Placement Program

EDS Objective 9.5

 

The UTS Student Placement Program is a voluntary arrangement.  Cabonne Council has participated in this Program the past 2 years and have provided industry experience to 3 students.  All projects undertaken are identified in the Cabonne Tourism Plan. The projects being proposed to be undertaken this year are as follows:

 

1.  Improving customer service and the provision of visitor information

 

This project relates to the following strategies listed in the Cabonne Shire Tourism Plan:

·   Strategy #4.1: Enhance a visitors experience when using all Cabonne’s Visitor Information Centres.

 

Audit all existing visitor information centres within the Shire and using the results of the audit, formulate and implement a strategy for improving customer service and overall experience.

 

·      Strategy #3.5: Cabonne Country website

·     

Review the existing Cabonne Country website www.cabonnecountry.com, and implement recommended changes.

 

2.  Enhancing and extending the visitor experience within Cabonne Shire

 

This project relates to the following strategies listed in the Cabonne Shire Tourism Plan:

 

·   Strategy #4.3: To make improvement to local tourist attractions within the Shire which will enable their story to be told and the visitors experience enhanced.

 

Identify tourist attractions across the Shire. Audit these sites and make recommendation to improve the visitors experience at each site.

 

·   Strategy #4.5: Investigate opportunities for cultural tourism development in Cabonne.

 

Identify opportunities within Cabonne for cultural tourism development, including the arts. Work with stakeholders to further develop this concept with the expectation to encourage visitation to the Shire.

 

GrantBlast

EDS Objectives 9.3 & 9.4

 

The three-month edition (January/February/March) of GrantBlast was distributed in January. Both the previous edition and the current edition can be accessed directly from Council’s website.

 

This edition of GrantBlast has prompted a good response from the readers, with a number of enquiries being made.

 

Grant Submissions

EDS Objectives 9.3 & 9.4

 

The Age of Fishes Museum submitted an Expression of Interest for funding under the Regional Development Australia Fund Round 3. The application requested $500,000.00 to construct a purpose built and well equipped exhibition/education and workshop/casting facility in the grounds of the AOFM. The Expression of Interest for this program was approved and is one of 5 projects from RDA Central West that have been selected to proceed to Full Application. The Manager of AOFM, EDM and CBDO will be working on the full application, which is due on March 27.

 

Other funding opportunities in progress:

 

·    The Cumnock Showground group have submitted an application under the 2013 Community Building Partnerships Program. The project is to gain funding to replace the toilet block facilities at the showground. Grant funding amount requested is $110,000. This application was submitted in November 2012 and is still pending.

 

·    Canowindra Sports Trust submitted an application for the Orange Credit Union Grants. They have applied for funding of up to $5,000 for seats to be placed around the fitness path. This application is still pending.

 

·    The Cumnock Golf Club Volunteers have submitted an application under the Participation and Facility Program through Sport and Recreation. They have applied for funding of approximately $20,000 for a new tractor to help maintain the course. This application was submitted in February 2013 and is still pending.

 

·    Canowindra Challenge Inc submitted an application for funding under the Sport and Recreation Events Program run by Sport and Recreation within the Office of Communities. This application was submitted October 2012 and is still pending.

 

Community Group Development

EDS Objective 9.4

 

Council has administered the following enquires and/or met with:

a.   Cumnock Showground Group - assisted with grant information for possible projects coming up.

b.   Canowindra Sports Trust – assisted with grant application.

c.   Canowindra Challenge Inc – continue to develop the 2013 event.

d.   Cudal Showground Committee – provided grant information and assistance.

e.   Age of Fishes Museum – ongoing support.

f.    Cumnock Golf Club Volunteers – assisted with grant application and other grant information.

g.   Molong Sheep Dog Trials – assistance with the 2013 event.

h.   Eugowra Mural’s Weekend Sub Committee - assistance with the 2013 event.

i.    Cargo 4WD Weekend - assistance with the 2013 event.

 

Business Enquiries & Development

EDS Strategy 10.7

 

Council has administered the following enquires:

a.   A Canowindra homewares outlet is interested in expanding their business to include coffee and food.

b.   A Molong resident is looking to start up a fast food business, selling a variety of fast foods from a food van.

c.   A person interested in setting up a Pharmacy in Eugowra.

d.   A man setting up a rally car business in Cargo looking for assistance.

e.   Selling of land at the Canowindra Industrial Estate.

 

2013 Cabonne Daroo Business Awards

EDS Objective 11.2

 

The first Daroo Awards Committee for 2013 was held on Tuesday 12 February 2013. There is currently representation on the committee from Molong, Yeoval, Cumnock and Mullion Creek, as well as the CEO of the BEC, the EDM and CBDO.

 

At the meeting, the new “People’s Choice” format for the 2013 awards was discussed. It was agreed that a model very similar to the Telstra Business Awards People’s Choice Award would be adopted. It was also agreed that the Best Business in Cabonne Award would be maintained and would run as it has in previous years, with an application and assessment.

 

The Daroo Awards will be held in Canowindra for 2013. The Committee is in the process of finding and securing a host group from Canowindra.

 

The next committee meeting for the 2013 Cabonne Daroo Business Awards is set to be held on 12 March 2013.

 

Canowindra Challenge Committee

EDS Strategy 9.4, 9.5 & 10.2

 

The EDM has recommenced meetings with the Canowindra Challenge Committee to continue to develop the 2013 event.  The Development Application, Traffic Management Plans and Permission to Use Crown Land for the 2013 event activities have been lodged for consideration.

 

Inxcess Pty Ltd, based in Canowindra has agreed to undertake the event marketing and sponsorship for 2013 event. Regular meetings are being held between all parties.

 

Resulting from the successful bid for Council’s Events Assistance Program funding, the major event being the Balloon Glow will be titled “Cabonne Country Canowindra Balloon Challenge 2013”.

 

Central West Economic Development Forum

EDS Objectives 9.5

 

The Central West Economic Development Forum was held on Wednesday 20 February at Bathurst. Council’s EDM is the Chairperson of this Committee.  The Committee meet 4 times annually.

 

The Central West Economic Development Forum is currently working on developing a Term of Reference for the Committee and regional economic development projects to be undertaken in the next 24 months.

 

Cabonne Community and Business Directory

EDS Objectives 9.5

 

The Community and Business Directory has now been updated to make the directory easier to use.

 

The directory is still available through the same channels; however the new format is intended to make the document much easier to navigate through.

 

The directory will assist existing residents and new residents with utilising the businesses and services available within Cabonne and promote local businesses and community groups that provide services into the Cabonne locality.

 

The Directory can be viewed online 24/7 at www.cabonnecountry.com
